What Walaal is

Walaal is a free, multilingual web platform that guides people through the practical parts of settling in Australia — understanding government services, finding work and education, preparing documents, practising interviews, and connecting with community.

It combines an AI life assistant with practical tools and community features that help people connect and support one another, so that no one has to navigate a new country alone.

Why Walaal exists

Arriving in a new country can be overwhelming. Forms are unfamiliar, systems work differently, and language can be a barrier — even when information is available in English.

Walaal exists to shorten the distance between a person and the next step they need to take, with calm guidance in their own language and a community that has their back.

The meaning behind the name

“Walaal” is a Somali word for a sibling or close kin — a term of warmth, belonging, and mutual care. The name reflects a simple belief: that the support we offer should feel like the support of family.

The kinds of support Walaal offers

  • An AI life assistant that helps with forms, questions, and next steps
  • Plain-language explanations of documents and official letters
  • A resume builder and interview practice tailored to the Australian job market
  • A settlement journey that breaks big tasks into small ones
  • A live search of local opportunities — jobs, volunteering, English classes, and community events (Walaal searches publicly available listings and does not provide or verify every listing itself)
  • Mentorship matching and a community “kindness map” of people helping people
  • Private reminders for document expiries like visas, Medicare, and licences

A multilingual vision

Walaal is built to work in English, Somali, and Arabic — including right-to-left layout for Arabic — because trusted support starts with understanding. Voice features (speaking and listening) are available where your browser and device support them, and work best in English; Somali and Arabic voice support depends on your browser. A text fallback is always available, so you are never reliant on voice.

A human-centred philosophy

Walaal is designed around trust, privacy, and dignity. Personal records are protected and are not visible to other users, while community contributions can be shared publicly when you choose to post them. Sensitive documents are handled with care, and the platform focuses on the next step — not overwhelming you with everything at once.

An important note on independence

Walaal is an independent platform and is not an Australian Government website or government service. Information on Walaal is general guidance to help you take the next step — it is not a substitute for official sources or qualified professional advice.
